Move of the Week: The Diversity of Hapkido Seen Through the Tai Otoshi

When writing these blogs on new moves, I am constantly learning something new about each art practiced at RIMA. This week, while observing the Korean variant of the Tai Otoshi in Hapkido, I was told that not only are there different variations of the "deadly art" all across Asia, but that they have multiple variations for every move. The Tai Otoshi demonstrated by Professor Chris Tricoli was one of the countless forms of performing the move, showing how intricate the art of Hapkido truly is. Beginning with a wrist grab and a twist of the shoulder while the attacker ducks underneath the arm they have grasped, the Tai Otoshi ends as soon as it starts. With its details focusing on feet placement and movement of the entire body, this body throw, variant or not, is truly one of a kind.
